For over 2 decades our Sisters had served the Diocese, in the field of education in Sambalpur town. Bishop Cheenath made repeated requests that we start a mission in one of the villages. When the time was ripe, Sr. Veronica Fernandez took up the challenge. Accordingly the new convent at Mhajapara was blessed on 9th July, 1986 by Fr. Scaria, in the presence of 17 sisters, 13 Priests and 300 parishioners.
Four Sisters -Sr. Mary Ann, Sr. Catherine, Sr. Priya (Nurse) ad Elizabeth (Novice) formed the first community. Overcoming bravely the main hurdles of distances and lack of proper transport, the Sisters began their work of building the Mission Community of people.

Medical aid and pastoral work was the main purpose of the Sisters among the Adivasis, who were happy to have Sisters to help them. A dispensary served the sick & poor.

As days sped into months and years the Sisters have been fully involved in the lives of the people through community outreach programmes to 14 villages and hamlets spread out in 4 Panchayats. Today the mission has grown and we conduct a mobile clinic, Health care, M.C.H. Programmes, 100% Immunization programme, Mahila Mandals, Adult Literacy Programmes and Youth Organisation. One Sister is fully involved in Pastoral work through B.C.C. Programmes, prayer meeting and home visits. The Sisters also run a hostel for 65 girls.

From a tiny seed, Mhajapara is a full fledged mission and the fruit of the Sisters work is seen in some of the vocations we have received recently. May His kingdom come in our hearts and in the hearts of the people.
