On the 15th January 1963 four Sisters set out from Nagpur, to begin their missionary work among the people of Orissa. They were Sisters Mary Anne (Superior), Catherine Lobo, Geralyn Ann and Thecla who were met at Jharsuguda by the S.V.D. Father Regional, who accommodated them in one of the Bungalows at Jharsuguda.
The Fathers and Sisters ‘Handmaids of Mary' were very kind and hospitable to them. On the 22nd January 1963 the Sisters were taken to the actual site of their Mission-Brooks Hill, Sambalpur. Here an abode was set up for them on February 11th 1963. On the feast of our lady of Lourdes, St. Joseph's Convent School was officially inaugurated.
Mr. Banmali Babu, M. L. A. took great pains in the establishment of the Institution and supported and cared for the Sisters all through the years. He expired on August 5th, 1998. Indeed it was a great loss for the institution. His loving memory will continue to linger in our hearts for years to come. The mission of the Sisters was to impart sound education, through formation of character, and the all-round development-spiritual, physical, academic and cultural of the student. Thus the Sisters strove to develop and improve the life-style of the people of Samblapur, economically and morally. With the building of the new Church, a parish was set up and the Sisters got involved in Pastoral and Parish work, taking care of the Church and the catechetical work and faith-formation in the Parish. The School progressed steadily, adding later an Oriya Section up to Std. V along with coaching classes for athe weaker students. A child whom we educate today is the future citizen of tomorrow and so the thrust is to build a better society in these difficult days so that each student becomes a beacon of light and hope to others along lifes journey.
